2016 Markel/USEF Young Horse Championships

Hilltop News 2016 Markel/USEF Young Horse Championships Return to All Hilltop News >>> Once again we made the long drive out to the beautiful Lamplight Equestrian Center in Wayne, IL for the Markel/USEF Young Horse Championships. Michael qualified two horses for the Championships this year and we’ll start off with the youngster. David Bowie MF (Don Principe-Rotspon) is bred and owned by Marydell Farm. His walk was the highlight and earned an 8.5 and 9 from the judges! Davey finished in 10th place overall at the USEF Four-Year Old National Championships. Michael agreed with the judges comments that a growth stage made the balance a little less consistent than it was earlier in the season, but the purity of his gaits and work ethic remain 100% solid and he’s looking forward to continuing his development. Sternlicht Hilltop (Soliman de Hus-Rascalino), owned by Hilltop Farm, had a very good showing in the Six-Year Old Preliminary class Friday morning. His overall score of 7.98 put him in a strong position going into Sunday’s Final. In the Finals, Michael was able to ask Sternlicht for more power and the connection was steadier than in the Preliminary round. The handsome pair finished in 3rd place overall with an 8.028 in the USEF Six-Year Old National Championships. Sternlicht’s breeder, Rachel Ehrlich, deserves a special mention as he was also the Top-Scoring US-Bred horse. Thank you to Michael’s sponsors, Purina Horse Feed, Hulsebos Saddles, and Cavallo who kept Michael and Sternlicht looking and feeling their best. Riverman USEF Leading Eventing Sire

Hilltop News Riverman USEF Leading Eventing Sire Return to All Hilltop News >>> With each step in their careers, the Riverman offspring continue to impress us with the versatile athleticism that has allowed them to succeed at the highest levels of most every discipline.   Over the years we’ve seen Riverman ranked near the top the USEF Leading Sire rankings in multiple disciplines and in 2015 his offspring once again earned him the honor of USEF Leading Eventing Sire.  The results of a few offspring were particular highlights.  Owned by Judith McSwain and bred by Charlotte Wrather, Fleecework’s Royal (ds. Corofino) handily won the Preliminary Championship at the USEA American Eventing Championships.  Fleecework’s Royal is a previous winner of the 5-Year Old Young Event Horse West Coast Championships.  Rachel Wilk’s River King (ds. Speed Play xx) competed at the Intermediate and Advanced Levels, picking up 5 top ten finishes.  River King was bred by Cheryl Byrd. Kaitlin Whitefield’s Rivoletto (ds. Flying Nashua xx) was a consistent mount at the Preliminary level, taking home the Preliminary Level win at The Event at Rebecca Farms.  Hilltop Farm would like to thank all of the breeders who have confidently chosen Riverman for their breeding plans over the years. Your breeding and competition efforts are truly appreciated and this recognition for Riverman could not have been possible without your efforts! Royal Prince (1999 – 2015)

Royal Prince (1999 – 2015)

Hilltop News Royal Prince (1999 – 2015) Return to All Hilltop News >>>  April 20, 1999 – January 20, 2015  “Good-night, sweet prince; And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.” ~ William Shakespeare It is with a broken heart that we share the news of Royal Prince’s passing this week.  Late in the afternoon of January 20th Royal Prince presented an acute colic and was immediately taken to New Bolton Center.  Unfortunately due to complications discovered during surgery, the only humane choice was to euthanize him. Royal Prince had a significant impact at Hilltop Farm.  In 2004 with Susanne Hassler, he placed fourth at the FEI World Championships for Young Horses – the highest American finish at the Championships to this day.  Royal Prince later helped Michael Bragdell earn his USDF Bronze and Silver Medals and he showed at Prix St. Georges with Chris Hickey.  Royal Prince developed into one of our most prominent stallions including winning the USEF Dressage Breeding Sire of the Year Award for five consecutive years. His offspring have been consistent winners at breed shows and inspections.  To date he has eight Elite Mare/Elite Mare Candidate daughters with the American Hanoverian Society and seven Premium Mares with ISR/Oldenburg. His offspring have earned USDF Horse of the Year titles, Regional Championships, and USDF All-Breeds Awards. Most importantly, Prince was part of our family.  The barn feels a bit empty without him here and while we are grateful for the years we had with him, we can’t help but feel his time here was cut far too short.  For those of you with a Royal...

He’s now finished his year undefeated at Third Level. Stallion News Hilltop Archives Nov, 2011 Hilltop’s 20th Anniversary Celebration It’s hard to believe that it really has been 20 years already. When Jane MacElree first purchased the stallions Cabaret and Nureyev, she had no idea of what would evolve in the coming years, but what a journey it has been! On October 29th Jane, the Hilltop staff, and many of our friends, family, and clients celebrated our 20th Anniversary with a wonderful party at the farm. Dressage at Devon Breed Show

Hilltop News Dressage at Devon Breed Show Return to All Hilltop News >>> Devon is one of our favorite shows and we always look forward to catching up with other breeders, owners, and friends at this historic show.  A large group of horses joined us from Hilltop’s Raising Department and Devon Prep Program making this year’s Devon especially busy for Team Hilltop.  Assisting Hilltop Handlers Quinnten Alston and Michael Bragdell was King Santacruz.  We were thrilled to welcome King back to Hilltop for the third consecutive year and can’t thank him enough for his extra assistance over the week.  His superb handling skills compliment Quinnten and Michael’s style so well. Tuesday’s warm sunny weather made for an excellent start to the show on Young Horse Day. Virginia Leary’s Don Hill gelding Don de Lion (Don Hill-Hawthorne) and Quinnten Alston kicked off the start of the show for Team Hilltop in the Yearling Colts and Geldings class with a 7th place finish. Don de Lion is from Don Hill’s first US foal crop; we’re enjoying seeing the early Don Hill foal crops out showing.  Following suit in the Dixon Oval in the 2-Year Old Colts and Gelding’s class Michael Bragdell handled Marydell Farm’s colt David Bowie MF (Don Principe-Rotspon) to a 3rd place finish.  Cha Ching HTF (Contucci-Cordoba) ended his Devon in-hand career with a 4th in the 3-Year Old Colts and Geldings and a win in the USDF/GAIG Colts and Gelding Final later in the day under Michael’s guidance. Also in the 3-Year Old Colts/Geldings, Quinnten handled Rolling Stone Farm’s Shopper (Shakespeare-Widmark) to a 2nd place finish. Shopper went...
