Frequently Asked Questions

What are the farm hours?

Office hours are Monday through Friday 8:00am – 4:00pm.  Lessons, tours, and stallion visits by appointment.

How do I get there?

Go to mapquest or see our Directions page.

Do you offer a Live Foal Guarantee on your breeding contracts?

Hilltop offers a Live Foal Guarantee with a Right of Return for a second season and a credit applied to a future breeding if a live foal is not produced in either season.  The terms may vary depending on the stallion.  Please call for further details.

What days do you collect the stallions and when do I have to call to request a shipment?

Hilltop can collect the stallions every day except Saturday.  We ask that when requesting a cooled or frozen semen shipment, you call by noon the day of shipping.  Sunday shipments and airline shipments  must be called in by 6pm the evening before.  Sorry, we cannot ship frozen semen by air.

Which stallions can I see in person at Hilltop Farm?

Contucci, Festrausch, Parabol, Royal Prince, Riverman and Tiamo Trocadero currently live at Hilltop Farm.  Videos are available on all other stallions represented by Hilltop Farm.

Can you help me choose a stallion for my mare?

We’re happy to help you make the best choice for your mare’s breeding based on her own conformation, movement, jumping ability, and temperament.  We invite you to call our office and ask for Natalie (410-658-9898, ext. 104) or complete our “Breeding Information Request Form” online for further advice. When calling, it’s helpful to have your mare’s pedigree handy as well as a good idea of what your breeding goals are.  You may also wish to send us a photo and/or video of your mare for further input.

Once I’ve chosen a stallion, how do I arrange the breeding?

Call our office and ask for Natalie (410-658-9898, ext. 104).  She will ask for the information to set up your contract and other paperwork.  We only ship semen once the contract has been returned and the breeding fee is paid in full, so please plan ahead.

What discounts do you offer?  Are their any stallions you do not discount?

We offer Premium, Elite/EMC, Keur, Performance Proven and Premium Producing Mare discounts. We also offer Multiple Mare and Return Breeder discounts.  See our 2007 Breeding Fees for more details.

What are my costs outside of the stud fee?

For cooled semen bookings, the distribution fee is $180 per shipment.  This includes your collection fee, container rental, and round-trip shipping by FedEx. For frozen semen bookings, there is a $245 distribution charge per shipment, which includes round-trip shipping of the tank as well as tank rental and handling fees.

Why don’t you offer frozen semen “by the dose”?

We believe in selling a ‘breeding right,’ which includes a live foal guarantee. Hilltop Farm is committed to offering our breeders complete service. Our focus is on seeing our breeders produce live foals, rather than emphasizing semen sales.

Do I have to register my foal?

While we do not require it, we very strongly recommend you register your foal.  A registered horse is a more marketable horse, providing a future buyer proof of parentage and further breeding options.  Even breeders who are producing their own future riding horse should register their foal.  Our country’s breeding/sport record keeping systems cannot be fulfilled with out each horse in sport bearing registration documents.

How and when should I register my foal?

Most registries require the foal be inspected before the end of their 2 year old year.  Please see our Registration Guidelines for more information.

How does Hilltop support my breeding endeavors?

Hilltop stands behind you and your offspring 100%, supporting you in several ways after the arrival of your foal.  We offer ongoing handling and educational seminars, handling at breed shows around the country, preparation for Dressage at Devon, free sale listings on our website, and promotion of your youngster’s sport or production achievements (link to breeders news).

What other services does Hilltop offer?

Our Raising and Training Programs are very popular services that further develop our relationship with breeders, although one does not necessarily have to be a Hilltop breeder to take advantage of these programs. We also offer a variety of training and educational seminars throughout the year.  Please keep an eye on our calendar for upcoming events.  We further invite you to attend the annual foal inspections held at Hilltop each summer.  Whether seeking your future Sporthorse, looking to evaluate foals of a specific stallion, or just increase your knowledge of the qualities necessary in a top Sporthorse,, inspections are always open to the public at no charge.
