Don Principe Shines at Dressage at Lamplight

Hilltop News Don Principe Shines at Dressage at Lamplight Return to All Hilltop News >>> Don Principe traveled along with Sternlicht for the long trip out to Chicago.  Two open shows were being held the same weekend as the Young Horse Championships and we took advantage of that scheduling to finish off Don Principe’s qualifiers for the USDF Regional Championships. In their first test on Thursday, he and Michael laid down a very harmonious and correct test in the Intermediaire B and were rewarded with a 70%. On Friday, Don Principe and Michael Bragdell competed in their 2nd Grand Prix and finished in 1st place with a 65.5% even with an error of course factored in.  On Sunday, they were back on ‘track’ and continued their winning streak, earning a 68.6% from judge Natalie Lamping in Sunday’s Grand Prix.  These scores finished off Michael’s USDF Gold Medal – congratulations! It was a perfect end to a wonderful weekend and very special to have Maryanna and Wendell Haymon there to celebrate with us. USEF/Markel Young Horse Championships

Hilltop News USEF/Markel Young Horse Championships Return to All Hilltop News >>> The horses arrived in great shape out in Chicago, with Sternlicht coming all the way from Hilltop and Jim Koford and Doctor Wendell MF (Don Principe-Sandro Hit) joining us from Kentucky.  The show management does an excellent job with this Championship and it’s become one of our favorite shows.  Despite substantial rain over the weekend, the Lamplight Equestrian Center looked wonderful and the footing drained well. Sternlicht’s first test on Thursday showed some brilliant moments and the scope that he offers, but also showed his need for more strength in balancing those gaits throughout the entire test. It was a good first day within a strong group of four year-olds.   That same day, Doctor Wendell MF and Jim Koford used the Third 2 for a quick warm-up. It was a great decision and earned a 70% for this newly established pair. Day two of the show started out with Duet, another Don Principe offspring, and Doctor Wendell MF in the FEI Six Year-Old Preliminary Test. With Brendan Curtis, Duet put in a harmonious, fluid test early in the class. Jim Koford and Doctor Wendell pulled out all the stops just a few horses later and were rewarded with an 8.06. Saturday at Lamplight brought lots of rain and thunderstorms that delayed the start of the 4yr old final by almost 2 hrs. Unfazed by the interruption to warm-up, Sternlicht laid down a very solid test with a more consistent balance and beautiful harmony with Michael. His score did improve on Thursday’s test and moved him up to...

ISR/Oldenburg NA Inspection at Hilltop

Hilltop News ISR/Oldenburg NA Inspection at Hilltop Return to All Hilltop News >>> Hilltop Farm hosted its annual ISR/Oldenburg inspection on August 16th.  The judging panel of Ekkehard Brysch, Dieter Felgendreher, and Gary Lawrence had a packed day of horses to evaluate.  Four stallions were presented for licensing and three were approved.  The approved stallions were Lea Ann Hansen’s Velluto (Schiffon-Urspring), Kindle Hill Farm’s GK Calucci (Calido I-Accord II), and Trestle Tree Farm’s Beaulieu’s Talisman (Toulon-Alexis Z). Four horses took part in the performance test which evaluates potential both in free jumping and under saddle.  Rag Doll, owned by Lauren Kimmel and bred by Angelique Le Vell, was the High-Score Winner of the Performance Test with an impressive 78 points overall including an 8.5 for jumping ability and an 8.0 for rideability.  Rag Doll (Regazzoni-Matissa) was also accepted into the Main Mare Book with a score of 97 points.  Christina Warfel’s pony mare Wrefleksion (Wicked Courtjester-Nieuwmoeds Patrick) passed the Mare Performance Test with an overall score of 70 points and was accepted into the Pony Mare Book with a score of 98 points.  Summit Sporthorses’ Piper (Popeye-Fascination) and Popgun (Popeye-Oliver Twist) earned scores of 7 on rideability and will add this performance test to their sport record.   This is a good reminder that the Performance Test is open to both Mares and Geldings and can give owners of geldings a wonderful goal to work towards in early training  while also helping refine the breeder’s evaluation of their own program. Nine additional mares were presented for breeding evaluation.  Due to pedigree, two were accepted into the Pre-Mare Book – Dancin...

Blue Goose August Dressage

Hilltop News Blue Goose August Dressage Return to All Hilltop News >>> The Blue Goose Dressage III show on August 6th was especially important to us here at Hilltop as it was Michael Bragdell’s Grand Prix debut on Marydell Farm’s Don Principe.  Under Marilyn Heath, the pair put down a harmonious, clean test and earned a score of 68.5%.  Highlights included an 8 for the first piaffe and 8’s for both the two-tempi and one-tempichanges.  This is the fifth rider Don Principe has carried into a Grand Prix – what other horse can speak to that record?  Hilltop’s young stallion Sternlicht also used this showing as a light outing before he heads to the USEF Young Horse Championships.  This is only Sternlicht’s 3rd show this season and he once again won the Young Horse class, this time with a score of 7.76 overall.  He’s training really well and we’re excited to head to Chicago in just 2 weeks’ time.
