About Donarweiss GGF

It was with great excitement that we welcomed Greengate Stud’s Donarweiss to our Guest Stallion line-up in 2008.  Donarweiss’s early creditionals were already impressive.  He was the NEDA Grand Champion, New England Cosequin Champion, and USDF Horse of the Year for 3 Year Old Colts & Geldings in 2004.  Donarweiss took part in the 30-Day Stallion Test in 2005.  Earning scores of '8' and higher for all three gaits, and a '9' for rideability, the dressage talent of his pedigree clearly shown through.  However, the judges at his 30-day test were also impressed by his jumping ability and awarded Donarweiss a '9' for technique and an '8' for capacity for his jumping scores.  Donarweiss GGF was named Overall Champion of his Performance Test.

Donarweiss showed in dressage the next two seasons, earning high scores and qualifying each year for the USEF/Markel Young Horse National Championships.  Christopher Hickey took over the ride in late 2007 and the results were immediate.  In January 2008, Donarweiss debuted at Prix St. Georges and immediately earned high scores and top placings on the competitive Florida circuit.  These impressive performances also finished off his requirements for his Lifetime Approval with ISR/OldenburgNA.  In July, Donarweiss was fully approved with the American Hanoverian Society creating further opportunities for North American breeders.  At only seven years old, he finished the 2008 show season ranked 14th in the nation and 1st for the American Hanoverian Society All-Breeds Awards with a median score over 68%.

His winning ways have continued in 2009 and he has earned scores as high as 78% at Intermediaire I and won the USDF Region 8 Prix St. Georges finals.  Donarweiss finished 3rd for the AHS All-Breeds Awards at Intermediaire I.  His piaffe and passage are developing well and he will debut at Intermediaire II in Florida in 2010.

Precocious FEI talent runs in the family.  Donarweiss’s full-brother Donarlicht is also an FEI competitor and in 2009 competed at the USEF Intermediaire I National Championships.  Their sire De Niro, was Reserve Champion of his Performance Test with a score of 141.93. He was also an FEI winner at an early age and had a distinguished career with over 24 wins at S level.  De Niro has also been a prolific producer and has 108 States Premium Mares and 25 approved sons.  His FN Breeding Value is 144 points in dressage.  De Niro was recently named the 2009 Stallion of the Year for the Hanoverian Verband due to his outstanding breeding record.  Grandsire Donnerhall was for many years the leading dressage stallion in the world.  Under Karin Rehbein, Donnerhall won medals at the European Championships and World Equestrian Games.

Donarweiss’s dam sire, Hohenstein, was Reserve Champion of his Stallion Performance Test and is very popular with breeders in Germany. His son, His Highness, caused an international sensation when he was sold for a record 550,000 Euro.  Hohenstein’s FN breeding value is an impressive 149 points for dressage. Hohenstein is the son of Caprimond, whose lovely type and excellent rideability has been utilized in Trakehner and Hanoverian breeding programs very successfully.  Further back in Donarweiss’s pedigree we find Argentan, the 1994 Hanoverian Stallion of the Year, who brings additional scope and jumping ability.

Intelligent, athletic, and charismatic all describe both Donarweiss and his offspring.  In only a few foal crops, we already see his consistency as a sire.  In 2008 on the East Coast a Donarweiss-Werbellin colt earned an 8.6 on movement and 8.4 overall as one of the highest scoring foals in the country.  Diva Modina won her Fillies of 2008 class at the Mid Ohio Classic with a score of 78.2%.

In 2009 we saw another Donarweiss foal dominate his inspection, this time on the West Coast.  Out of Ivy (by Ideal), Val Zeek’s Dragon Fly earned an 8.7 on movement, 9 on overall impression, and an 8.8 overall.  Donarweiss’s oldest offspring have proven easy to start and are showing successfully with their amateur and junior owners.

Donarweiss GGF is already proving to be a very consistent sire.  His type and topline transmit consistently across amongst foals from a wide variety of mares and we were especially impressed with the movement of the 2009 foal crop.  While his oldest are just now showing under saddle, we expect his offspring to be versatile athletes suitable for a variety of riders.

"Proving his trainability, Donarweiss has taken very well to all of the Grand Prix movements. The one tempi's are easy for him and he shows very good ability to sit in canter pirouettes and also in the piaffe. These are traits that make a great GP horse." ~ Chris Hickey
